In the Media – my personal feeling is that disability is often portrayed as a triumph over adversity and I wonder whether people who have a disability would consider their disability to be an ‘adversity’ or whether it is simply a part of who they are? Yes , from listening to the views of students/Learners and through personal experience within my own family What is the first thing that comes to mind when someone says disabled? A person - an individual with strengths, needs, likes, dislikes and aspirations. | Can you think of five famous disabled people represented in the media? Stephen Hawkings is probably the most well -known to me but that is because I am interested in the subjects he talks about. I am hopeless at remembering the names of any famous people/celebrities as I only watch things I'm interested in and don't buy newspapers or magazines. Is the representation of disability accurate? and is disability represented as positive or negative? Give examples why I don't have a disability and therefore I don't feel I can comment on whether the representation is accurate. | GraceHow do you feel disability is represented? I don't know really, I don't think the media really puts any emphasis on it in Australia. So I'm not sure if it's represented well in Australia by media standards. What is the first thing that comes to mind when someone says disabled? A person in a wheelchair is what first comes to my mind. Can you think of five famous disabled people represented in the media? Artie from Glee, but the actor isn't actually wheelchair bound. So that doesn't really count. To be honest, no, I don't really look for disabilities in a person. |
