GraceHow do you feel the view of disability can be changed? I think that people need to be educated on how to address the subject with both broaching or receiving the topic. I think also education on the different types and how to cater to the more pronounced disabilities. People need to be made more aware of the social implications physically, emotionally and psychologically a disability has on a person. | LaurenceHow do you feel the view of disability can be changed? As I have said I believe it has changed & continues to change through inspirational stories/events etc & through people in the public eye performing jobs/tasks that they would have not been considered for in the past. JeanHow do you feel the view of disability can be changed? My personal experience is that people are ‘afraid’ and we need to remove the fear . Stereotypical attitudes and views are often continued through lack of awareness or education and myths are carried down through generations. | It would require a whole societal shift in attitude and for more people with disabilities to have a say, have their views represented and carried through into policies and legislation. I think there are some positive moves toward a more inclusive society but sadly, for some disabilities particularly, society still seems to generally have a stereotypical view . This is often ‘if you can’t see it’ , the individual is fine or ‘if the individual is in a wheelchair’ , they can’t do certain things, ‘if they have learning difficulties’ they may not make good parents, ‘People with Autism don’t have a sense of humour’ etc etc….there are lots of myths that need busting! |
